A Unix timestamp counts seconds since 1 January 1970 UTC. It's the lingua franca of time in software, databases, logs, JWTs, and Ethereum's block.timestamp all use it. Because it's an absolute instant, the same number renders as different clock times depending on timezone, which is why this tool always shows UTC alongside your local time.
For blockchain work it's especially handy: token vesting cliffs, staking lock periods and governance deadlines are stored as epoch seconds, so translating them to a real date is the first step in verifying they behave as intended.
